DEMONS AND DEVILS – PART TWO

Satan’s strong men can take various forms.  They are often seen in vision as Greek gods, or Chinese, Hawaiian or other deities that mankind worship.  Both demons on earth and those in the mid-heavens can take the form of a serpent, scorpion, frogs, etc.  Gen. 3:1; Lk. 10:19; Rev. 16:13-14.  Animistic religions worship demons in animal forms such as a shark, owl, turtle, various birds, goat, pig, cow, and so forth.  Revelation 18:2 refers to demons as “hateful birds.”  Ezekiel 8:10 describes evil spirits worshipped by the people of Israel during the Babylonian captivity as follows:  “So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon the wall round about.”  Almost anything imaginable can be worshipped as gods and goddesses.  Eze. 8:12.

Isaiah 13:21-22 speaks of the destruction of physical and historical Babylon:  “But wild beasts of the desert shall be there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.  And the wild beasts of the island shall cry in their desolate houses, and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.”  The word “satyr” is the Greek for a half-man, half-goat creature.  This prophecy applied to ancient Babylon and will apply to spiritual Babylon at the end of the age.  “And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. . . And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakes of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”  Rev. 18:2, 4.

Satan himself often appears as half-goat, half-man.  The Greeks and Romans worshipped a half-goat, half-man deity called “Pan,” “Fawn” and “Satyr.”  Hindus worship cows and many South Pacific people worship the shark, owl, turtle, etc.  At times, evil spirits can appear as beautiful or handsome human beings.  The Prince of Darkness is often a tall, handsome man that is worshipped by female fortune-tellers and psychics.  We’ve come across it.  The Chinese, of course, worship the dragon and phoenix bird.  Eskimos and Hawaiians worship the hawk.  The Bible says that Babylon will be inhabited by dragons, owls and goats.  Is. 13:21; 34:13; 43:20.  Since Babylon no longer exists in the physical, except for a few buildings, this passage most likely applies to spiritual Babylon which exists today.  The spirit of death can appear in a black hood (someone must have seen it in the form of the “grim reaper” at one time and we too have seen it in that form).

We have seen ruler spirits in the form of Chinese gods and goddesses such as Kwan Dai Gung and Kwan Yin, the “goddess of mercy.”  Kwan Dai Gung is a warrior god often seen with a long, black beard and dressed in green.  Many Chinese restaurants burn incense to this demon.  He is often seen with two or three other Chinese “gods.”  The Chinese monkey god also is a form that some demons take.  Hawaiians worship a half-pig, half-man demigod called Kamapua’a, and the goddess of the volcanoes called Pele, who is seen sometimes as a beautiful, young woman and at other times as an old hag.  Satan loves to manipulate mankind’s desire to worship by creating counterfeit religions based on animals and supposedly super heroes.

At times, as we prayed intensely against Satan’s strong men, especially witchcraft or Jezebel, the room would turn cold and one or more deliverance workers would see a spirit with wings.  At times, it would look like a pterodactyl, a huge bat, or even some entity similar to Darth Vader seen in Star Wars.  As we continued to pray, it would disappear.

Whenever an evil spirit is seen with wings, it is a messenger or strong man sent from the mid-heavens.  Not all of Satan’s strong men appear with wings, however.  The ones at the very top of Satan’s chain of command will not usually bother coming to earth in person.  They will send their underlings.

Some so-called Christians can be so controlled by demons that they can appear to be model saints and yet be working for Satan.  “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”  2 Co. 11:13-15.  Satan can appear as an angel of light and so can his dark angels.  That is one of the reasons why the apostle Paul stated, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.  As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”  Gal. 1:8-9.

Yet, mankind has accepted new gospels or messages from “angels from heaven” and received it as truth.  Islam was supposedly founded by the angel Gabriel who announced that Jesus was only a prophet and had failed to complete His task on earth.  Mormonism was also founded by an angel from heaven who came to correct the Bible and add several new gospels.  These angels were never tested according to the apostle John’s instructions in 1 John 4:2-3.  “Hereby know ye the Spirit of God.  Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come, and even now already is it in the world.”

If someone or even an angel from heaven come preaching a gospel that is not in the Bible, do not receive him or his message.

Seeing in the spirit is a gift given by God, but not all discernment of spirits take place in this fashion.  One does not have to “see” these forms.  Most of the time, I just know that I know.  I will sometimes say, “There is a spirit in that corner,” and one of our team workers would remark, “There is a spirit in that corner that looks like a monkey.”  Winn Worley, a pioneer in deliverance, once wrote that he asked God why others could actually see demons and he could not.  God answered, “That’s because you’re a teacher and if you mention that you could see demons, everyone will think that you have to see demons in order to cast them out.”  In actually, you just need faith and should not go by sight or emotions.

If you can see demons in the spirit realm, it does not automatically mean that you have a gift from God.  Sometimes, it comes from the dark side or is a mixture.  Some Christians “inherit” the ability to see ghosts and evil spirits from ancestors who were psychics, fortune-tellers, or ardent worshippers of some false god.  Remember, psychics and some priests in other religions can also “see” spirits.

A danger is that someone who can see the actual forms of ghosts and/or evil spirits will have a bit of notoriety and fame.  People will adore and admire that person.  After a time, he or she may become obsessed with seeing demons and ghosts and will grow to love story-telling about what they saw.  Attention is drawn to them instead of God and they “steal” God’s glory.

Discernment of spirits is a gift of the Holy Spirit (1 Co. 12:10) and is given for  the purpose of evangelism and confirming the gospel by demonstration of power by the Holy Spirit.  If one is not using that gift for the purpose of converting souls or delivering people from the bondages of Satan, he/she is misusing or under-using the gift.
