DEMONS AND DEVILS – PART THREE

Satan’s strong men, or princes that rule from the mid-heavens, give power to the spirits on earth through cords that connect them, like a fuel line.  Once I had just finished casting out devils from a person and walked around the room.  I came upon a group of saints trying to cast out devils from a woman, but was not having any success.  The spirits laughed at the workers and said, “You’re too weak for me.  You’ll never get me out – no way!”  (by using the person’s voice)  As I stood next to them, someone came up to me and said, “I just had a vision of a large cloud and a small cloud beneath the large one.  I saw something like a pipeline that connected the two clouds.”  I asked the group, “Did you cut off the cords between the strong man and the spirits in her?”  They all shook their heads.  As they prayed to cut off the cords between the strong men and the spirits in the person, the demons began to scream, “Why did you do that?  Now we have to go!”  They left immediately.

Cutting off and casting away the cords connecting ruler spirits with demons in a person, is like cutting off the line of supply of the enemy, a well-known military strategy.  If you cut off their supply line, the enemy will become weak.  These cords are not the same as bands and cords used to tie up a person; they are supply lines that transfer power or strength from the strong men to those on earth under their command.

Deliverance workers often attest to seeing bands which bind people’s minds and bodies in the spirit realm, and cords that may connect demons in one person with demons in other persons who have the same spiritual problems.  They also see cords that connect spirits in a person with ruler spirits in the mid-heavens.  Psalm 129:4 states, “The Lord is righteous: He hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.”  Psalm 2:3 says, “Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.”  Satan uses bands to tie a person up in the spirit realm.  Psalm 2:3, however, refers to both “bands” and “cords,”  thus implying that they are two different things.  Breaking bands is one thing; casting away cords is another.  Of course, one can interpret it either way.

I once prayed for a pastor who had spirits of rejection.  As we were praying for him, he received a vision of a boy around eight years of age surrounded by a very high wall of ice that encircled him.  There was a tiny window in the wall, out of which the youngster stuck his head out from time to time.  When people approached, however, he would pull his head back behind the walls.  I had a vision of this pastor with bands around his mind and body that looked similar to bands around a wooden barrel, dark brown in color.  As the workers prayed to break every band and cord, I saw myself looking down from about fifty feet in the air, upon a man in a large park holding a big bunch of balloons by their strings.  Suddenly, all the strings broke as if someone had cut them and the balloons floated up into the sky.  Soon thereafter, spirits of rejection left one after the other.

It turned out that the pastor’s parents had divorced when he was eight years old and spirits of rejection entered.  Often, Satan places lies in the minds of children whose parents divorce.  They think that the divorce is their fault, or that the parents are rejecting them in some way because they end up living with only one parent.  The rejected child starts to build a wall of ice around his heart to guard against future rejection.  When people try to get close to him, he pulls back into his icy cell and refuses to allow others get close to him.  After all, the people who are supposed to love you and are closest to you are usually the ones that hurt you through rejection, real or imagined.  When the cords of the enemy are cut off and cast away, his spirit and soul are freed from bondage.  This is an example of cords or bands that bind people.

Matthew 19:16 says, “. . . (A)nd whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Some Bible scholars interpret this passage to mean that we can loose “joy” and “love;” however, another interpretation is that we on earth have the power to bind up Satan’s strong men in the mid-heavens and loose the cords that connect Satan’s princes in the mid-heavens to evil spirits on earth that either inhabit people or are controlling people and events from outside.

Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 says, “Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”  People who foolishly toy around with astral projection know that there is a silver cord that connects the physical body and the spirit of man.  If the spirit of man travels too far away from his body, the silver cord may break, death will come and “the dust return to the earth as it was.”  Both the “golden bowl” and the pitcher at the fountain are used to carry something essential to sustain life and if broken cannot hold and deliver something necessary for life, water or food for instance.

The “wheel” refers to the winch found at a well or cistern that is used to lower and lift a bucket to bring forth water.  If the winch is broken, water cannot be brought to the surface, and the people will suffer or even die.  These metaphors are related to something that sustains life.  Break or loose the silver cord, golden bowl, pitcher or wheel and the one dependent on them for strength or sustenance cannot function, will weaken and be forced to leave.

There are many ways to pray to cut off cords that connect demons; after all, it is the Holy Spirit that does the work.  I use a simple prayer such as:  “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I take the Word of God, which is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and to the joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Heb. 4:12), and I cut off and sever any and all cords that connect the spirits in this woman (or man) to the spirit of rejection (or whatever you discern the ruling spirit is),  I cast them away in Jesus’ name.  Go now in Jesus’ name!”

EARTHBOUND DEMONS

The second general category of demons is earthbound spirits.  Included are evil spirits dwelling in people, and those outside of people.  Demons come in many forms and shapes and different sizes, as indicated in a previous article.  They can counterfeit humans at times.  I once had a young girl who would see her deceased grandmother in dreams and visions and who would receive personal advice and “guidance” from her “grandmother.”  She would at times remark that her grandmother was her guardian angel.  When we prayed over her one day, she saw her grandmother in vision.  When we rebuked the grandmother or whatever was using her likeness, the “grandmother” suddenly turned into an ugly demon that leered and laughed deliriously at the woman.  She screamed as the demon came out.

Demons can also come in amorphous forms or formlessness.  The bigger they are, the more power they have.  I’ve seen a demon as big as a car.  They are called “unclean” or “foul” spirits because they smell awful at times.  Deliverance workers sometimes smell rotting flesh or sulfur fumes.  Once, I was praying over a woman and the room was filled with the odor of rotting flesh.  When I commanded that the spirits identify themselves, they gave me Hawaiian names.  She was from New York and had no Hawaiian ancestors, but had visited an Hawaiian temple (called “heeiau”) and for fun, laid down on a large, flat stone.  It turned out that it was an altar upon which human sacrifices had been offered to Hawaiian gods (called “akua” and “aumakua”) in ancient times.  These evil spirits had entered were setting her up as a human sacrifice.  She was only twenty-six years old but had many physical problems after that.  We destroyed the spiritual heeiau and commanded the demons to leave and they left.  Sometimes we see in vision Buddhist or Taoist altars in a person’s body, spiritually that is, and pray that fire will come down from heaven and destroy the altar.  A few times, we saw that person’s name plate on the altar in a Shinto temple and commanded it to be taken out of the temple and burned.  Oriental families have the custom of placing a child’s name on a flat wooden stick and placing it on an altar or wall in the temple to their deity and dedicate that child to the gods or goddesses.  Roman Catholics frequently dedicate a child and make vows to the Virgin Mary or to the “Saints” in return for good health or fortune for the child.  They are worshipping demons.

I ministered in Sarawak some years ago and the students in the Bible college there had dormitories on the bottom floor of a new building.  However, I discovered that all the boys were staying in a room on the second floor and all the girls in another room on the same floor.  Upon questioning, during a spiritual warfare class, I found that they had abandoned their dormitories because the boy’s dormitory smelled horribly and an evil presence was felt.  In the girl’s dorm, they would often hear a young child crying in the dark.  No one knew what to do.  They were excited when I announced that we were going to cleanse their dormitories.  All twenty-five students followed us and our interpreter.  They all spoke mostly Chinese.  We walked to the boys’ dorm and as soon as we opened the door, we smelled something awful.  One of my workers immediately saw a large, black, amorphous mass sitting on one of the bunk beds.  When I commanded the spirit to leave in the name of Jesus, it suddenly fled past us and out of the door.  We could feel a wind pass us and a horrible smell at the same time as the students fell back from the doorway.   It was a foul spirit.

When we walked over to the girls’ dorm and opened the door, my fellow-worker saw a spirit of a young boy about eight years old standing in the middle of the room and crying.  He was calling for his mother.  I asked the translator about the history of the room and she replied that a couple had lived there with their eight year old son, but the young boy had died.  It was not an evil spirit, but a ghost.  I spoke aloud and told the young boy that I was going to ask God to send angels to pick him up and take him to heaven where Jesus would love him forever and play with him and take care of him.  One day, his mother and father would join him in heaven.  “Do not be afraid, you will see angels that are very bright people come down from heaven to pick you up to take you to Jesus who loves you very much, or a light coming down from heaven.”  I prayed and instantly, some saw bright rays of light coming down through the ceiling.  The spirit of the young boy went up the shaft of light and disappeared.  Both the boys’ and girls’ dorm were cleansed and they never experienced any other “spooky” thing thereafter.

As we left the girls’ dorm, the Chinese translator was talking to middle-aged woman and she asked if I could bless the woman’s apartment, which was at the near corner.  I agreed.  As she opened the door to her apartment, a tiny spirit that looked like a monkey about eight inches high, fled out of the apartment.  It was an “imp” or spirit of pain.  I asked the woman if she ever had headaches or stomach aches.  She relied, “Every day!”

One of my nephews had open-heart surgery and was in great pain whenever he coughed.  His doctors wanted him to cough up phlegm as part of the healing process and gave him a red, heart-shaped cushion to hug whenever he coughed.  When I visited him at the hospital one night, he said, “Uncle, you’re right.  I was coughing and in pain today and when I looked down at my cushion, I saw this tiny monkey-like spirit jumping up and down and laughing.  I commanded it to leave in Jesus’ name and it was so surprised as it ran away.  The pain left.”

Earthbound spirits come in varying shapes and sizes.  They can actually make themselves of normal size or shrink into much smaller forms so that they can enter people and hide.  The bigger they are, the more power they have.  They have no wings, but can run very rapidly.  .

There are many evil spirits prowling the earth and inhabiting people.  Brother Frank Hammond used to say, “We deliverance ministers have been accused of teaching that there is a demon behind every bush.  That’s not true.  There are two!”  Thankfully, demons cannot enter or oppress unless they have a right given by God either through curses brought about by sins, or by petitioning God as the accuser of the brethren.  Job 1 and 2; Rev. 12:10.  We discussed curses in prior articles.

Before we go any further, I want to say that I am not a super-Christian oozzing the anointing and presence of God; nor do I have special powers from God, at least not in my own eyes.  I cannot just wave my hand and spirits flee.  I have to work hard at it.  I studied hard to learn deliverance and practiced on as many people as were willing.  Sometimes, nothing happened and at other times, lo and behold! demons fled in bunches.  Very often, I surprise myself when people are healed or set free.  After all, it is not me but God who does the miracles.  Sometimes I have to work for hours to get one demon out.  At other times, people walk into the room and fall to the ground, demons fleeing without me so much as speaking a word.  It’s God who did it, not me, that’s for sure.

I am just an ordinary person of average or lower than average stature, looks and abilities.  My personality is average and I am not charismatic, although I have a wry sense of humor.  I am also not a talented orator and quite ordinary in the way I speak.  God has not given me the supernatural ability to see ghosts and evil spirits at will and I see only occasionally with my spiritual eyes.  I’m just an old man who loves God with all of his heart, at least I hope so.  I’m still trying to empty out all the junk in my heart.  I often forget to pray or read my Bible, although I think of God all the time and praise him often.   I get lazy at times and miss opportunities to share the gospel and I want to kick myself in the behind when that happens.  Others have much more ability to see in the spirit.  After all, I’ve been into deliverance for almost thirty years and am sure to see some things every so often.   In other words, everything I teach and do is the same as what any Christian can do if he/she has a little knowledge and faith in the Bible and in the Lord Jesus Christ and has the courage to stand and fight for the kingdom of God.  God is not a respecter of persons.  He is just looking for ordinary people that are willing to trust Him, who believe what the Bible says, and are willing to join His great army and “go for broke.”
