DEMONS AND DEVILS – PART ELEVEN

A LEGALISTIC ENEMY

Demons will occasionally flee without any apparent effort by deliverance workers.  I say “occasionally” because it mostly happens without foreknowledge and is solely an act of the Holy Spirit.  There have been times when people merely entering the auditorium, room, church, or climbing up the steps to the stage begin coughing and dry-heaving uncontrollably as demons leave.  I am as surprised as anybody.

The presence of God is enough to cause demons to flee.  The Holy Spirit breaks curses and casts out devils by His very presence.  Some people are more gifted in the area of deliverance, even as some Christians have the gift of miraculous healing and only have to speak the Word and a person is healed of physical or mental ailments.  It is from God.  Nevertheless, all Christians should know how to cast out devils.  Mk. 16:17.

Demons know who are Christians and also, who can cast them out.  They are afraid of believers who know how to cast out devils.  There is a certain bright light that identifies you.  Perhaps it is the Holy Spirit or perhaps your own light as a child of light.  All true Christians are children of light and that light continues to grow in size and intensity as we mature in Jesus Christ.  “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”  Eph. 5:8; 1 Th. 5:5; 2 Pet. 1:19.  As I entered a room once, workers were praying for a person who had his back to me.  He immediately shouted, “Richard, why are you here?”  The workers were surprised.  Devils know if you are a Christian not by your physical looks or even words.  They see your light in the darkness of this world.  A good friend of mine and his wife were once called to pray for a young lady they did not know.  As soon as they entered the room, the girl with a demon screamed, “Harold and Nancy, who called you?”  I made up those two names.

Remember the seven sons of Sceva who tried to cast out devils but were not believers?

“Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.  And there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.  And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?  And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.”  Ac. 19:13-16.  The evil spirit knew that the seven sons of Sceva were not believers and followers of Jesus.

I have heard stories of unbelievers using the name of Jesus Christ when an evil presence came upon them and they were desperate.  Perhaps, the Lord permitted it in order to bring them to Christ.

Your light shines brighter and brighter as you mature in Christ.  Whether the light is the Holy Spirit or your spirit, or both, is irrelevant.  All Christians need to know as much as they can about the enemy.  This is true for me and for every other saint, whether especially gifted to cast out devils or not.  “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledte3: because thou has rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee. . . .”  Hos. 4:6.  This is especially true when it comes to casting out of devils and healing the sick.  Knowledge is available, but the churches reject knowledge on the basis that it does not conform to their beliefs about devils, since there is no such thing as a personal Satan, or demons, or Christians cannot have demons.  They compromise or deny many Bible truths and accept only those passages that agree with their own theology and denomination.  Satan has deceived them already.  At the end of this age, Satan’s kingdom will seek to destroy all churches and Christians.  Those without knowledge will most likely be destroyed.  “And it was given unto him (Satan’s beast) to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues and nations.”  Rev. 13:7; Da. 7:21, 25; Mt. 24:15.  All-out war is coming soon.  We have but a small window of opportunity to lean how to defend ourselves and ultimately destroy Satan’s kingdom.  Whether you will stand and make it through will be up to you.  God’s purposes will all be fulfilled one way or other.

SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES

There are certain spiritual principles established by God that we need to be aware of.  One such principle is:  Satan cannot torment or enter without a right given to him, established and granted by God.  God sets the parameters.  Secondly, if the devil knows that he has rights to a person, he will not leave.  Satan is a legalist.  In order to cast out demons, one needs to destroy and eliminate all rights, gates or doors evil spirits use to enter.  Occasionally, Christian deliverance workers through sheer strength of the Word of God, the blood and name of Jesus, can force demons out of a person.  However, if legal rights remain, the demons promptly re-enter.

The Lord Jesus said, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, her w alketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.  Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out, and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.  Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. . . .”  Mt. 12:43; Lk. 11:24.  After demons are cast out of a man, they can come back if the curses are still there.  His former abode is still available and ready for his return.

In one particular case in mind, workers bombarded spirits incessantly until they left.  The following week, however, the same spirits were found in the person again.  Three or four successive deliverance sessions found the identical spirits present.  The young woman insisted that she had methodically eliminated all abominations and cursed objects in her house, as instructed.  The mystery was resolved, however, when the mother of the young lady confessed to retaining a number of memorabilia belonging to the Free Masonry organization her deceased husband participated in.  When she disposed of those cursed objects, the spirits left without returning.  Deu. 7:26.

In another case, a Christian went from church to church visiting many different speakers and healers over a period of ten years, to no avail.  No relief was gained or made permanent, however, until cursed objects in his home were destroyed.

In some situations, unforgiveness continues to open the gates and give rights to demons to enter and stay.  A person may insist that he forgave everyone, but it exists only in his head and not his heart.  His bitterness and resentment remained.  We will discuss cursed objects and the importance of forgiveness in a later article.

CURSES OF INIQUITY OR GENERATIONAL CURSES

Demons are given the right to enter and oppress where there are curses caused by sins of the ancestors.  “And the Lord passed by before him and proclaimed: The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty: visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”  Ex. 34:6-7.  The same passage is repeated in essence in Deuteronomy 3:9 and Numbers 14:18.

Very few families possess “clean” ancestries, untainted by any occult involvement, including the worship of strange gods such as in Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Shintoism, Roman Catholicism, American Indian sorcery, animism, just plain old witchcraft, and so forth.  Sins of the ancestors create curses that come down upon the third and fourth generation and even further.  One sin, in particular, illegitimacy, brings curses down even unto the tenth generation.  Deu. 23: 2.  If so, America is in deep trouble since almost 50% of children born in America are illegitimate.

God is sovereign and who can argue with Him about the fairness or unfairness of cursing the generations?  Can the clay argue with the potter?  God is God.  If He says that the stain of sin passes down, so be it.  In ancient times, a man considered his children and descendants his treasures on earth.  In old age, a couple could survive and live in comparative safety if they had good children who cared for them.  A man’s power was extended every time a son or other descendant became prosperous or successful.  Children took care of their parents and ancestors.  If misfortune fell on a person’s children and descendants, it directly affected him and/or her.  It seems natural that a person would not want his children or descendants to be cursed and fall to destruction.

God purposed to curse the generations in order to persuade His people to reject evil and to live righteously.  The curses caused by their sins of Adam and Eve have traveled down many generations.  Curses caused by ancestors can bring much suffering, torment, misfortune, accidents and poverty, even among Christians,.  Many have ancestors who practiced occult arts.

Curses caused by a person’s own sins or that of his parents or ancestors were acknowledged by the Lord Jesus and His disciples.  “And as Jesus passed by, He saw a man which was blind from his birth.  And His disciples asked Him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that her was born blind?  Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents, but that the work of God should be made manifest in him.”  Jn. 9:1-3   That is one of the reasons why repentance is so necessary in a Christian’s walk with God.

JESUS SERVED AS OUR CURSE

The good news is that Jesus Christ served as a curse for us on the cross.  Galatians 3:13 says, “Jesus hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.”  Where there is repentance, the Lord Jesus Christ will break the curses that have come down upon us.
